Multiple Intelligence

The theory of multiple intelligences was developed in 1983 by Dr. Howard Gardner, professor of education at Harvard University.

It suggests that the traditional notion of intelligence, based on I.Q. testing, is far too limited. Instead, Dr. Gardner proposes eight different intelligences to account for a broader range of human potential in children and adults.

These intelligences are:

bulletLinguistic intelligence ("word smart"):
bulletLogical-mathematical intelligence ("number/reasoning smart")
bulletSpatial intelligence ("picture smart")
bulletBodily-Kinesthetic intelligence ("body smart")
bulletMusical intelligence ("music smart")
bulletInterpersonal intelligence ("people smart")
bulletIntrapersonal intelligence ("self smart")
bulletNaturalist intelligence ("nature smart")

In Tagalog street lingo, people would normally ask a person who is so magaling: “ano ba ang pinakain ng nanay mo sa iyo, bakit ang galing mo?” “Or kanino ka ba nagmana?” “Or genius ka ba?”

In the English thesaurus, the word genius has been described with numerous meanings: prodigy, virtuoso, aptitude, talent.

And countless more. But they all point to one thing: the human intellect. What is your level of intellect? Me IQ ka ba?

Plato once concluded that the human intellect was an inherited characteristic, borne out of genes.

Up to a certain level, this notion has been embraced by a few, while many quarters in this society challenged this assumption such as the Binet-Simon theory which linked cultural environment to the intellectual functioning of the human mind.

Ano ba talaga ang multiple intelligences? Intelligence is not a single and fixed trait as has been commonly conceptualized in the past.

“Meron ka ba niyan?” a funny Tagalog jargon but which has a no-nonsense explanation.

Is it really about genes? A good diet due to economic class? Cultural environment? Do teachers play a significant role? A psychologist validates.

O ano, meron ka ba nito??
